Jack E. Phelps - Obituary
Soldotna, AK area resident Jack E. Phelps, 74, passed away Wednesday, Apr. 25, 2018 at home from Alzheimer’s disease.
A graveside memorial will be held Monday, May 28, at Armstrong Grove Cemetery in Armstrong, Iowa. Chaplain Mark Hill, USAF, will officiate.
Jack was born Sept. 2, 1943 in Fairmont, MN. He served as a combat medic in the US Navy during Vietnam. Jack worked for the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources as a State Park Ranger from 1972 until 2000, when he moved to Anchorage. In 2001, he began working for TSA until retiring in 2007. He then moved to Soldotna.
Jack was a long time member of the Evangelical Covenant Church. He was a foster parent for a special needs child and was a volunteer with Special Olympics and Hospice. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, road trips, reading, Bible study, and spending time outdoors brought him comfort and peace. He was particularly adept with children and loved helping kids explore nature.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Lucille Lund, brother Gary and brother-in-law, Clarence Dobmeier Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hill, of Soldotna, AK; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Chad and Cynthia Hill of Eagan, MN, and Rev. Mark and JoAnna Hill of Anchorage, AK; brother, Gene Phelps of Coon Rapids, MN; grandchildren, Abigail, Kjersti, Gabriel, Mattias, and Courtney; foster son, Anthony; sister-in-law, Nancy Dobmeier of Little Falls, MN; nephew, Brett (Jessie); and niece, Brittany.
Rather than flowers, the family prefers memorial donations sent to the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
