Pastors Column

Pastor Lyn

Pastor Lyn Roesler, United Methodist Church, Armstrong

When I first went to candidate at the Albion Evangelical Free Church, I thought the size of the church was very funny. When I drove into the gravel parking lot and saw the little white church with the double white outhouse on the west and the parsonage on the east. Now I was not looking for a great big church for my first fulltime pastorate and I knew that God had brought me here for a reason. When I went up to the balcony, I laughed out loud. I was glad I was alone. I felt like I could touch the pulpit, that is how small it felt. Zechariah 4:10 “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?” “Little is much when God is in it! Labor not for wealth or fame There's a crown, and you can win it If you go in Jesus' name”

Looks can be deceiving as you know. This was the most loving congregation I have ever been a part of. The only complaint about a member was that the piano player didn’t wear a dress for Sunday Church AM and PM. The pianist was old and thin, and she would get cold without her legs covered. (Remember those days of two services on Sunday plus Sunday School) A third service Sunday in the afternoon, once every other month for communion. Wow! They were really serious about the Lord’s Table.

Remember when Church members expected the pastor to visit them in their homes. Well this was the best part of what they taught me. I was in the home of every member and attender on a regular schedule. (this in not the way things are now) The coffee pot was always on and Rusks became my favorite snack. (this was a Swedish Community)
I went fishing with those who fished, I went golfing with those who golfed, I even helped farm or build. ( I Loved to plow) I even learned how to make Root Beer. The kindness and respect they gave their 22 year old pastor, and his wife were amazing.

This little church in the middle of a corn field was growing! Even with this know-it-all for a pastor. I will have to finish my story next time I write for Armstrong Journal. To conclude this part of my testimony I will share the fact that. When God is working, Satan will try to stop it! And the devil was right there to bring BIG trouble. Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Zechariah 3:1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. 2 The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” How are things going for you today? If you say good or great look out and remember as a Christian you are in a Spiritual Battle each and every day.
